We are required to know many things to stay abreast of current events. To have real knowledge of these things, we should have a depth of information about them. Because of the many events, discoveries, inventions, etc. prehaps we can only know alittle about a lot and should confine ourselves to having real knowledge of a few things. About what would you choose to know more? You could choose: preparedness in case of a catastrophic event; a historical event or person; a disease; politics or the presidential election; the species of animal that keeps showing up unwelcomed in our area, the cougar; things of popular interest, like Hip Hop.
These things come to mind as I look at the titles of new books:
Listening to Cougar, edited by Bekoff & Lowe - a collection of close encounters with the mountain lion.
The Secret History of the War on Cancer by Devra Davis - a look at who finances the research and controls the information and use of it.
The Head in Edward Nubent's Hand : Roanoke's forgotten Indians by Michael Oberg - the explanation of the Indians reactions and the colonists reactions to encountering one another that set the stage for relationships after.
What to do When the Shit Hits the fan by Dave Black - are you prepared to deal with an emergency?
Undecided Voter's guide to the Next President : who the candidates are, where they come from and how you can choose by Mark Halperin
Can't buy me Love : the Beatles, Britain and America by Jonathan Could
Check the Technique : liner notes for Hip-Hop junkes by Brian Coleman

Valetta,
I would choose to know more about the modern philosophers of mind and cognition. Making meaning from the ashes is also a topic of interest. There is a book called Disruption by Gay Becker I would really like to get my hands on (-: I believe it has a 1997 publication date but I only recently found the title. Purportedly she describes how people create meaning while standing in the ashes of their life. Sue Martin
I think having a book on the implications of the new Linear Hydron Collider would be great!
